New York–Parents for Occupy Wall St. and their children call for all of New York’s children and parents to join to take colored sticks of calcium carbonate in their hands and defiantly ‘Chalkupy’ Liberty Plaza for the right to play freely in public space!
When: Saturday, March 17, 11am
Where: Liberty Plaza/Zuccotti Park
The first occupier ever arrested at Liberty Plaza/Zuccotti was arrested and detained for writing the word “love” in chalk. Recently 3 occupiers were arrested and held for over 20 hours for the heinous acts of criminal trespass, trespass and graffiti. Two of the occupiers were arrested for drawing on the ground with sidewalk chalk, the 3rd for watching them.
This latest example of the NYPD subjecting outrageous oppression on peaceful OWS protestors, and suppression of first amendment free speech in a 24 hour public park is a blatant waste of time, our community tax dollars and police resources.
We plan to cover the park with vibrant chalks of 99% Super Heroes, OWS Kids Characters, and 1% Meanies. Bring Chalk!
Last December a Parents For Occupy Wall St. action protesting the bullying of Occupy Wall Street protesters exposed further that NYPD bullying knows no boundaries. Officers destroyed children’s artwork displayed at City Hall, 5000 decorated paper hearts that represented the number of Occupy arrests at that time.
Blatant abuse of power continues almost daily to be displayed by the NYPD – going even as far as making extraordinary efforts to block journalists from covering the activity of the authorities in regard to the Occupy movement. Parents For Occupy Wall St. and our children will continue our actions in protest against the NYPD – giving voice to and space for the people they are trying to silence and detain.
A recent statement by Commissioner Ray Kelly regarding budgetary expansions for the cost of overtime for police officers (already some 17 million dollars) indicates that the City of New Yorks Administration isn’t interested in listening to the people.
Occupy Wall Street is part of an international people powered movement fighting for economic justice in the face of neoliberal economic practices, the crimes of Wall Street, and a government controlled by monied interests. #OWS is the 99% organizing to end the tyranny of the 1%.
