On Monday, Sept. 10 at 5pm teachers and Labor activists in New York City, including members of the Movement of Rank and File Educators (MORE) and the Occupy Wall Street Labor Outreach Committee, are sponsoring a rally in solidarity with the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU). Teachers are striking for increased resources and quality programs for students and fair working conditions for teachers.
The rally will take place at the Union Square South steps and will be followed by a march at 5:30 to Broadway between 21st and 22nd Streets, office of Democrats for Education Reform (DFER), a PAC run by hedge fund managers and charter network executives. We will be protesting their aggressive lobbying against the CTU and support for anti-teacher, pro-privatization candidates in NYC.
New Yorkers in solidarity with the CTU see the Chicago teachers’ fight as part of a growing national resistance movement against corporate-backed education reformers who bash teachers, push high stakes testing, and promote school privatization as solutions to the problems in our public education system. The destructive “reforms” being pushed in Chicago are the same as those we see here in New York.
