99% TO WALL STREET: WE’RE COMING FOR YOU!
ACTIONS SET FOR SEPT. 15, 16 AND 17 AS YEAR TWO BEGINS;

OCCUPY WALL STREET CONTINUES PUSHBACK AGAINST 1% GREED
“ALL ROADS LEAD TO WALL STREET”

The 99%? “Of course, they’re fighting back after 30 years of being shot at.” -Bill Gross, manager of the world’s largest mutual fund

[NEW YORK] September 17, 2012 (#S17) marks the beginning of year two of Occupy Wall Street (OWS). Under the banner All Roads Lead to Wall Street three days of education, celebration and resistance to economic injustice are planned for September 15-17, with convergences and assemblies, concerts, and some of OWS’s famous direct action planned for 7 AM, September 17th at the New York Stock Exchange. Solidarity actions are being planned in dozens of cities across the country.

It is now nearly four years since Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy, helping catapult our global economy into a new phase of disrepair and dragging millions of ordinary people down with it. No complaints from the rich 1% – they’re still rich; and they won’t release their stranglehold on power and our livelihoods without a struggle.

“If we take another 10 percent of middle-class America’s income, who knows what kind of other social unrest could happen in this country and the changes that could happen to our way of life?” -Jeff Greene, billionaire real estate investor

For years, people all over the world have been crippled by the greed of wealthy individuals and large corporations who have taken huge bonuses at the expense of wages, pensions and healthcare for working people. Over the past year, OWS has arisen to take on these very powerful and unscrupulous forces, sounding alarms about Wall Street’s global greed. As OWS, along with so many others, have looked closely at the widespread corruption of political institutions, at income inequality—all roads lead to Wall Street.

Over the past year, for exercising our constitutional rights to protest–marching with signs and chants to draw the public’s attention to the fact that rich and powerful have spoiled it for many, we have endured thousands of arrests. Despite a billionaire mayor of New York and the NYPD we continue the struggle, sending clear messages up those financial district high rises, rattling the 1%. The NYPD forcibly and illegally removed us last November, governments around the world followed suit and used concussion grenades, tear gas, riot gear, pepper spray and arrests to disband camps and protests. And the criminal prosecutions for bankers and financial institutions who all-but-collapsed our global economic system? They look to be getting off scot-free.

One deep imprint that OWS has made over the last year is the simple phrase, “We are the 99%.” Those few words are a foundation on which real economic justice will be won. Across the country, OWS has people talking about who gets what, who has a safety net and who ends up thrown under the bus.

Across the country, Occupy wins include:

  • Successfully, with allies, pressured New York Governor Cuomo to reverse course and enact a Millionaires Tax;
  • Brought attention to rapidly ballooning student debt, which reached $1 trillion in April, 2012;
  • Not a win, but shined a grim spotlight on the suppression of protest by police and other government agencies http://bit.ly/OnxlCg;
  • With the support of their communities and the Occupy Homes movement, dozens of families across the country fighting eviction and foreclosure have been able to stay in their homes;
  • Spurred the moving billions of dollars of consumer and municipal funds away from big banks and into small nonprofit credit unions.

As the second year begins, our many campaigns continue: against unconscionable debt, inhumane foreclosures, public policies that exploit workers and the poor, and for a better world in which people are more important than profits. OWS won’t stop until we, the 99%, get what we deserve–economic justice.
